DESIGN IDEAS: BOATSHED INSPIRATION

BOATSHED STYLE

Boat style house designs, also known as nautical or coastal style, are architectural designs inspired by the aesthetics and functionality of boats and ships. These unique and charming homes often feature distinctive elements that mimic the look and feel of a boat, traditionally creating a sense of being on a permanent seaside vacation with The front façades offering a stunning first impression with its asymmetric profile.

One of the key features of boat style house designs is their exterior appearance. These homes typically have a sleek and streamlined shape often with mirrored or adjacent roof lines joined by central living or outdoor space.

The use of light coloured weatherboards are a prominent feature of boat house designs however as you can see in more recent examples of this aesthetic in homes we have built it is more architecturally sound to use a cedar cladding for a more modern take on the traditional boatshed style.

It’s important to pay homage to the surroundings without being too predictable with these designs. The Boat House look is a  contemporary coastal style, all about functionality and creating space. It is characterised by clean lines and a minimal colour palette. The space is clean and clutter free whilst being cosy and comfortable, relaxing and serene.

Large windows are strategically placed to maximize natural light and provide breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape, whether it be a coastal beach, rural farmland or a urban setting. The windows are often adorned with aluminium or timber shutters or porthole-like frames, adding to the nautical theme. The interior of boat style houses is designed to create a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.

Open floor plans with exposed rafters in pitched ceiling are common, allowing for easy flow and a sense of spaciousness. The use of light and neutral colours, such as whites, blues, and sandy tones, helps to create a calming and beachy ambiance.

Top tips

1.  Don’t get confused with the style, are you wanting the traditional white relaxed beach side retreat with accents of blues and greens? Or a more architectural and sleek modern design?

2.  Boat House interiors often blur the line between indoors and outdoors, with windows everywhere and glass doors and skylights allowing sunshine to flood in. For window treatments think shutters, Venetian blinds or linen curtains at most.

3.  Wide and thick comfy sofas, linen fabrics, floaty sheers and white or pastels are great choices for this look. A casual feel is important, but this doesn’t mean sacrificing luxury.

4.  Both clean and weathered woods work perfectly, timbers worn smooth and bleached out.

5.  Creating a coastal feel in a bathroom is best achieved with tiles in shades of the sea, from deep blue to teal with white.
